There are two main purposes: 1) To meet the traditional goals of an internship (that is, to provide a strong career link for students with the employer community and to enable employers to work with students prior to making a job offer); and, 2) To create Service-Learning opportunities for students by providing engagement with health care settings as our Service-Learning partners, experience for students who are building careers, reflection opportunities for students in the weekly seminar, and dissemination of learning through papers written for the course.

To the topOn the home page, click on HSC 4500 at left, then click on Forms. Click on Hard Copy Application. Print, Complete and Submit it to the Department by the deadline date. After the Department receives your hard copy application, it is reviewed to make sure you meet the above requirements. Within a month, you will be contacted using the e-mail you put on the application [Contact the instructor ONLY after this period is over and you have not heard about the status of your application]. PLEASE WRITE YOUR E-MAIL VERY CAREFULLY IN SINGLE LETTERS! THIS IS THE E-MAIL WE SHALL USE TO CONTACT YOU!
You will get either of two messages:
1) Thanks for submitting your application for the HSc 4500 internship class. The Dept. has now completed reviewing it. You have been approved for this class and will be registered by the Dept. after your response below.
Please e-mail the instructor (oscar.wambuguh@csueastbay.edu) stating whether you have secured an internship STARTING THE FIRST WEEK OF THE QUARTER YOU PLAN TO TAKE THE CLASS. Please be careful: do not confirm if you are NOT SURE because you will be forced to drop the class when the quarter starts. If you are not sure about your internship yet, just state so. If you have an internship promised (and CONFIRMED) already, state so. After we receive your e-mail message, your name will be put among those qualified to register for the class and sent to the Department. The Department will register you automatically.
After you are registered, download and print out the Learning Contract under Forms on the HSC 4500 link. Fill out the Learning Contract and obtain the signature of your field work supervisor/preceptor. Make sure his/her business card is attached to the Contract. Deliver the Contract to the course faculty (Dr. Wambuguh) by latest: the second week of classes. The course faculty will review the Contract, sign and file it. This Contract now confirms the official commitment of your Internship institution to provide you with the opportunity and supervision to enable you complete the required 90 internship hours.
OFFICIALLY, YOUR REQUIRED 90 HRS START COUNTING THE FIRST WEEK OF THE QUARTER (PLEASE KEEP TRACK OF YOUR HOURS (USE THE INTERNSHIP TIMESHEET under "Forms"!)
2) Thanks for submitting your application for the HSc 4500 internship class. You have NOT been approved to register for this class for one of the reasons indicated below:
The FIVE most common reasons for not getting approved are:
E-mail your questions to the course faculty: oscar.wambuguh@csueastbay.edu
To the topApplications to register for this class are accepted by the Department until Week 10 (last week of classes) the quarter PRIOR to the quarter you intend to take the class. No applications are accepted during FINALS week. For instance, if you intend to take the class in the spring, the last day to submit your application is the Friday (by 4 pm) of Week 10 of the winter quarter. PLEASE NOTE: THE DEPARTMENT WILL NOT ACCEPT APPLICATIONS AFTER THE FRIDAY OF WEEK 10, PRIOR QUARTER.
To the topAfter your application is processed, you will receive an e-mail informing you your application is on hold until you submit the required documents. However, you can continue looking for an internship.
To the topStart looking for an internship site at least a quarter or two before the quarter you plan to enroll. Ask other students how they selected a site. Search for a location through this website under Internships & Volunteer Positions by clicking the link on the left of the home screen. Please check the Career Development Centre under Internships. You will need to login with your net ID. Other good clicks are: the CSUEB Service-Learning Sites, Directories of Hospitals and Clinics, the County Health Services Directories. Visit websites for hospitals, clinics, health agencies, corporations, labs, pharmaceutical companies and other health care and biotech industries. Contact the Human Resources Department, the Director of Training, or Director of Volunteer Services. Attend Internship Fairs, Career Fairs, and Job Fairs on campus and obtain information about internship openings. THE DEADLINE TO LOCATE AN INTERNSHIP IS USUALLY BY THE SECOND MEETING OF THE CLASS (IF YOU HAVE NOT LOCATED ONE, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO CONTINUE IN THE CLASS, UNFORTUNATELY).
To the topYour supervisor is someone who works in the site you have selected or are considering. This person agrees to serve as your mentor, guide, and evaluator during your 90 hours of internship work. Normally, your supervisor is a manager or supervisor in the health care setting and may be identified from various sources: by yourself or by someone you know, by the website for the healthcare setting, by listings in the CSUEB Career Development Centre or other CSUEB listings, and by other listings you discover on-line or from other networking and searching efforts you make.
To the topThe total minimum time required for the supervised fieldwork is 90 hours. There is also one hour per week of seminar (class meeting time), plus the time you will need to write the TWO Reports for the course: Progress Report (100 pts) & the Overall Final Report (200 pts). More information about these reports will be available on Blackboard when you register in the class. There are no exams in this course. At the end of your internship you will need to provide an Internship Timesheet (signed by your preceptor) documenting your internship hours on a weekly basis.
Internships are usually chosen depending on what a student’s career interests are - we do not limit what kind of internship it has to be - students usually decide the experiences that will be most meaningful with their supervisors. The objectives are for students to get relevant experience in the health care sector, network with health care personnel and polish some of their inter-personal communication and writing skills.
Hours are arranged between student and supervisor and can follow any pattern in the course of the quarter (that is can be 10 hrs/week, 15 hrs, 20 hrs, etc.). Many students complete the required 90 hrs by mid-quarter which is fine with the Department. The Dept. usually require that timesheets indicate hours were completed when the student was registered in the course - this means if you start earlier, those hours will not be included on the timesheet submitted to the Dept.
Complete the 90 hours of supervised fieldwork. Attend the weekly meetings. Prepare the course Reports and submit them by the deadline dates usually posted in the syllabus on Blackboard. Your overall grade will be determined by completion of the 90 hours (as certified by the supervisor Evaluation & Timesheet), the two reports, attendance & participation.
PLEASE NOTE 1: TO AVOID AN "F" GRADE, ALL STUDENTS MUST PASS THE WRITING COMPONENT WITH AT LEAST 70% IN THE OVERALL FINAL REPORT. IF YOU DO NOT ACHIEVE THIS 70% MARK, YOU WILL GET AN "F" GRADE AND YOU WILL NEED TO RE-REGISTER AT A FUTURE QUARTER.
PLEASE NOTE 2: After you turn in the hard copy of your Final Report, you have a week to submit an electronic copy of the same report through TURNITIN available on Blackboard. TURNITIN checks your report against online databases for plagiarized material. It highlights material that is similar and gives your overall report a similarity percentage (the higher this percentage is, the higher your risk of being cited for plagiarism!). The University treats plagiarism cases very seriously and submission of plagiarized material can put your academic standing in serious jeopardy. Please check the University catalogue for more information ON THIS IMPORTANT REQUIREMENT.
To the topThe course meets once a week for writing seminar/workshop/internship discussions. If the course is a hybrid, class meetings are biweekly as indicated on the course syllabus available during the first meeting. Online classes do not have an in-class meeting on campus although students need to ensure their final reports reach the office of the course faculty (progress reports are submitted through Blackboard for online classes – pls see syllabus). The course text is: The APA Manual, (latest edition) by the American Psychological Association, available at the bookstore or online. For detailed information about preparing your Reports please, check Blackboard.
To the topYou have to make sure during the ninth week you print the Course Evaluation Form & Timesheet from the HSC 4500 link and take it to your supervisor/preceptor. He/She will complete the evaluation and send it directly to the address on the form. To avoid getting an "INC" grade, this form must be received by the FRIDAY of the 11 week (finals week). Any evaluations received after this week will get an "INC" grade. The Department is not responsible for mailed Evaluations that get delayed/misplaced due to insufficient/inappropriate addresses. IF YOUR PLACE OF INTERNSHIP HAS REQUIRED TIMESHEETS DOCUMENTING YOUR HOURS, YOU CAN PROVIDE A PRINT-OUT OF THOSE SIGNED BY YOUR PRECEPTOR. A LETTER MAILED FROM YOUR SUPERVISOR STATING YOU HAVE COMPLETED 90 HRS IS ALSO ACCEPTABLE.
To the topDownload BOTH applications and complete the appropriate places. Remember both Applications are due by Week 10 of the quarter (spring quarter — not summer — for fall classes).
Contact the course faculty directly by e-mail: oscar.wambuguh@csueastbay.edu. SHOULD YOU CONTACT THE DEPARTMENT INSTEAD, IT WILL REFER YOU TO COURSE FACULTY.
Information about the senior seminar is available on Blackboard ONLY when you are registered for the course. If you need more information please e-mail the instructor listed on the course schedule for more information.
