Office of Faculty Development Survey

9/23/2002

Your final analysis of the Survey Data is due this week on Tuesday or Wednesday.  You can drop it off after the advising session you attend on either Tuesday or Wednesday.

You should turn in a printed report and an electronic version of the report.  You can email it to me if you want to you can give it to me on a floppy disk.

Finally, along with your report you should turn in a book request from amazon.com.  To get your book you need to turn in your report this week.

How is everyone's data analysis going?

This week we are scheduled to meet on Wednesday and Thursday.  I cannot make the Wednesday meeting, but I will be available on Tuesday 9/17/2002 from 6-7pm.  So plan to attend either tomorrow Tuesday or Thursday evening between 6 and 7pm.  If you need to meet after 7pm please send me an email and let me know.

You need to bring your data sheets and your analysis.  The plan is too be almost finished with your analysis by the time you attend the meeting.  I would like to collect everyone's analysis this week and at the latest next Monday or Tuesday, anything turned in after that will not be useful to the Office of Faculty Development but I will still look at it.

The data is in!  There are two files, a .xls and .doc file.

The .xls file contains all of the data from the gold survey forms.  Surveys 31-35 and 48-50 were excluded since they were the white forms which were a different format.  (Marvin and Andrew should confirm that this is correct.)  Recall that the responses were on a different scale from the gold forms and it is possible that the subjects responded twice.

The .doc file contains all of the responses to Q16.  (Some people added other comments from other questions.  These comments should be ignored since they do not related to Q16.)  This data should be summarized into common themes or ideas.  Q16 is an open ended question do this analysis will be qualitative.  If you haven't submitted a file yet containing the comment, please do so asap.

The Analysis:

  • The first thing that needs to be done is that each person needs to check that I copied the data correctly into the .xls and .doc files.  This is one more check of the data.
  • Check that the number of rows in the file is 175 - 5 - 3 = 167.
  • Choose to use SPSS, Minitab, or SAS.
  • If you plan to use SPSS or Minitab, load the data into the spread sheet for that program.
  • If you plan to use SAS, write the data set to load in a .txt file or use the IMPORT command to load the .xls file.  You might use the pull down menu to load the data and save the code that it uses to load the data.
  • After the data is loaded, the analysis will proceed in three parts.
    • First descriptive summary statistics need to be calculated.  For each part of each question a table with the summary counts and percentages needs to be created.  Note that counts and percentages are the appropriate summaries since all of the data collected is categorical.  You might also run bar graphs and pie charts for all or some of these also.
    • Second the relationships between some of the variables should be examined using Chi-Square tests.  For example, the independence of Interest and Confidence using email might be tested.
    • Third a model of some relationship might be developed using a logistic regression or log-linear model.  (This part is for the more advanced graduate students who are familiar or interested in these methods.)

If you are done with the survey forms I would like to start to collect them.  If you do not come to campus often you can bring them to the next meeting or you can drop them off at the Statistics Office and have someone put them into my box.

The next meeting will be on Wednesday Sept. 18 or Thursday September 19.

8/21/2002

See you in two weeks.  We will meet on Wed. August 21 or Th. August 22 from 6-8pm to discuss any questions about the coding of the data and to collect all of the data into a single data file.  If you have not submitted your .xls file containing the data and your .doc file containing the responses to the open ended questions please do so by 5pm Wed. August 21.

Please come to one of the meeting only.

The next step will be to plan the analysis of the data.

8/7/2002

Please complete you data entry, have one of the other people working on the survey verify your data entry, and finally send your .xls file to Ken Lee and Prof. Suess.
