LVN-BSN OPTION
Information for FALL 2013 Admission
ABOUT THE LVN-BSN PROGRAM
The LVN-BSN program is being offered to any applicants with an extensive medical knowledge and/or experience in the following field: License Vocational Nurse (LVN).
This program is open to those who would like to further their education to obtain the baccalaureate degree in Science of Nursing. Upon completion of the LVN-BSN program, the student is qualified to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) and apply for the California Public Health Nursing Certificate.
ELIGIBILITY
The following steps are required to become eligible for the LVN-BSN program. Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee admission to the program.
- Current Licensure as a vocational nurse in California.
- Submission of official transcripts to the CSUEB Admissions Office by Feb. 14th.The Nursing department does NOT require separate transcripts.
- Completion of all required prerequisites by the Fall term in which you apply. No grades below C are acceptable (a grade of C- is not acceptable). You must have a GPA of at least 3.00 in the following:
a. nine prerequisite courses, and
b. five prerequisite science courses.
- Meet all University Admission requirements by University deadline or continued enrollment in good standing at CSUEB.
- Submission of Official TEAS Score to Nursing Department by February 14th if not taken at CSUEB. The TEAS are scheduled monthly via CSUEB Testing Office.
APPLICATION DEADLINES
To be considered for admission to the LVN-BSN program, students must complete two online applications:
- The CSUEB Application for Admission.
- The LVN-BSN supplemental application.
The LVN-BSN application will be available on this website from Oct. 1 - Nov. 30 each year.
LVN-BSN application due by November 30th at 5:00 p.m.

CREDIT FOR NURSING PREFIX COURSES
Students with special studies or experiences may already have achieved the objectives of certain courses and may petition to receive credit after a portfolio and transcript review. Students can petition for credit, for prior learning, for the following classes only:
- Nurs 2022 (2) - Level I Nursing Skills
- Nurs 2031 (2) - Care of Adults Practicum
- Nurs 2042 (1) - Level I Nursing Skills II
After admission to the LVN-BSN program, the applicant must contact the department to make an appointment with an advisor. Each applicant's previous education and work experience will be individually assessed to design an optimal learning program.
Credit by examination is also possible for other Nursing coursework based on portfolio and transcript review. Proper steps to take this petition action would be as followed:
- Students interested in the challenge must notify the department no later than 2 weeks prior to the first day of class. To receive credit under this plan, the student must register for the class the quarter in which it is listed in the catalog.
- A petition for credit by examination is obtained from the Nursing Office. The examination will be administered within the first two weeks of the quarter.
- If the exam is passed, the grade and Credit By Examination will be indicated on the student's permanent record.
- If the student fails the examination, the student must complete the course to receive credit.
MAJOR REQUIREMENTS
The nursing major requires lower division and upper division coursework. Students enter the LVN-BSN program in Fall Quarter each year after having completed nine prerequisite courses. Please note that (*) Anatomy and Physiology must be taken at the same school if courses are combined (e.g., Anat & Phys I and Anat & Phys II); but, may be taken at different schools if separate (e.g., Anatomy is one course, Physiology is another). All prerequisites must be completed by the end of FALL for a candidate to be eligible for the Nursing program beginning the following FALL academic year.
