PRE-LICENSURE CLINICAL NURSING PROGRAM


PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

The following is a list of the most frequently asked questions from students inquiring about the PRE-LICENSURE CLINICAL NURSING PROGRAM at CSU East Bay. PLEASE do your part and read through these questions carefully. If, at the end, your questions have still not been answered, please attend one of the many informational meetings that are offered.


  1. Who is eligible for the pre-licensure program?
    Any student who meets the minimum GPA/prerequisite requirements and does not yet have an RN license.
  2. Can I talk to a Nursing Advisor before I apply to the program?
    We recommend that you attend one of our monthly advising sessions first.  Go to the nursing website at http://www.sci.csueastbay.edu/nursing and check the "General Advising Sessions" link for times and locations of the sessions.
  3. When is the Nursing Application available?
    Applications are available during the months of October and November from the Department of Nursing website at: http://www.sci.csueastbay.edu/nursing.
  4. When is the deadline for the program?
    The Nursing Supplemental Application is due on November 30th.
  5. Where do I get the Nursing Supplemental application?
    The Nursing Supplemental Application is available only through the Department of Nursing website at: http://www.sci.csueastbay.edu/nursing.
  6. How many applications must I submit?
    Students transferring from another school must submit the following TWO applications.
    1. A completed CSU East Bay Admission Application for admission into the University (online at http://www.csumentor.edu).
    2. A completed Nursing Supplemental Application for admission to the BSN program: Applications are available from Oct 1 - Nov 30 at: http://www.sci.csueastbay.edu/nursing.

    For current CSUEB students, only ONE Nursing Supplemental application is required. This application is available only during the months of October and November.
  7. Where do I send my University application and transcripts?
    For transfer students, the General University Application at http://www.csumentor.edu is an online application that will be submitted electronically. This application will notify students as to where they need to send their transcripts.
  8. How many transcripts will I need to send?
    You will need to send official transcripts to the CSUEB's Nursing Department as well as to CSUEB's Admissions Office. After the Nursing Department does an initial review of applications, they will individually request official transcripts from qualified candidates. Please do not send transcripts the Nursing Department until they are requested.
  9. Can the Admissions Office send the Nursing Department a copy of my transcripts?
    NO. Our offices are separate from each other, and we each keep our own set of records.
  10. Does the Department of Nursing have a waitlist?
    Yes. We usually have 50-75 students on standby (waitlist) in case any of the students who accept our offer of admission change their minds or do not meet conditions. We contact those on the waitlist until we have a full cohort for our Hayward and Concord Campus. We keep the waitlist active until the classes begin in the Fall.  Waitlisted students who do not receive admission into the program may reapply the following application period.
  11. When I submit the University Application, it says the Nursing major is closed.  What should I do?
    You can choose "Undeclared" or "Pre-Nursing" as your major.  After all of the Nursing applications are reviewed, the Nursing Department sends the Admissions Office a list of admitted Nursing students. The Admissions Office then revises each of the students' majors to correctly appear as "Nursing" once the program begins (Fall quarter every year).
  12. How many years will it take to complete the BSN pre-licensure program?
    Three years.
  13. Do you admit for the Spring semester?
    NO.
  14. Do I need to be a current student at CSUEB in order to apply?
    NO. CSUEB Department of Nursing is open to both current CSUEB students and transfer students.
  15. I'm not a resident of California, can I still apply?
    YES, we accept non-California residents as well as international students.
  16. Is there an application fee?
    There is a University Application Fee for students who are transferring to CSUEB. There is no fee for the Nursing Supplemental Application.
  17. Does the CSUEB Department of Nursing accept any AP scores in lieu of specific prerequisites?
    The nursing program will accept AP Scores for only one non-science prerequisite course. Students must earn a "3" or higher score on the AP test to receive college credit.
  18. What is the most important factor in determining admission?
    Both GPA and TEAS score are important factors in the admission process.
  19. I know CSUEB's BSN program is quite competitive; what GPA will guarantee my admissions?
    There is no GPA that will guarantee a student's admission. In order to qualify for eligibility, the Department of Nursing requires an overall GPA of 3.00 in the most recent 90 quarter/60 semester units of coursework, a minimum 3.00 GPA in all nursing prerequisite courses and a minimum 3.00 GPA in the science prerequisites.
  20. I have an LVN -I want to obtain a BSN -is there a special program for me?
    Anyone who is an LVN can apply to the Department of Nursing BSN program through normal channels as outlined above.
  21. I am a CNA/EMT/Paramedic -how can I receive my BSN?
    Anyone who is a CNA/EMT/Paramedic must apply to the Department of Nursing BSN program through normal channels as outlined above.
  22. I already have a bachelor's degree; is there an accelerated BSN program offered at CSUEB?
    NO - the Department of Nursing does not offer an accelerated BSN program.
  23. I have an RN license and an Associate's Degree; is this the right program for me?
    You are eligible to apply to our RN-BSN Advanced Placement Option if you already have an RN license and want to come back to school to earn a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (see next section's FAQ).
  24. Are there any admission tests for the Nursing Program?
    Yes. Students are required to take a Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS).
  25. When can I take the TEAS test?
    You can take the TEAS when our Testing Department offers them. Typically, the TEAS test is offered in late August through mid-March. Please visit http://testing.csueastbay.edu/nursteasdates.asp or call 510-885-3661. If you need special testing arrangements because of a disability, contact the Student Disability Resource Center at (510) 885-3868.
  26. How can I prepare for the TEAS test?
    Study guides are available at the CSUEB Bookstore and at the online store on the ATI website - http://www.atitesting.com.
  27. What score from the TEAS test does the Nursing Department look at?
    The Adjusted Individual Total Score.
  28. Can I retake the TEAS test if I'm unhappy with my score?
    There are no penalties for retaking the TEAS test. Our program only considers the first two attempts at the TEAS exam, and takes the highest score from these two attempts.
  29. Can I use the results of my TEAS test taken from another college?
    Yes. If the TEAS test was taken elsewhere, you must send an official report of TEAS score to the Nursing Department. You can request official results from the ATI website: http://www.atitesting.com
  30. What are the optional criteria available? Are they required?
    The optional criteria for CSUEB's Department of Nursing are not requirements, but they can help strengthen a student's application. The optional criteria's include Foreign Language Proficiency and Work Experience in Health Care Environment.
  31. How can I prove Foreign Language Proficiency?
    Reporting Foreign Language Proficiency is based on an honor system meaning if you report proficiency in a foreign language then we'll believe you. Your non-English language skill must be certified and you must also score no lower than the 50th percentile on the "English and Reading" sections of the TEAS. HOWEVER, if at anytime it becomes clear that you have falsified this information the Department of Nursing can dismiss you from the program.
  32. What does Health Care Experience mean?
    Your Health Care work experience must be paid (not volunteer) and for the equivalent of six months full-time involving direct patient care. Examples would include working with patients at a medical facility such as a hospital or community medical clinic. Work experience must be documented by filling out the Health Care Worker Application.
  33. Are Letters of Recommendations required?
    NO.
  34. Is there an interview?
    NO.
  35. Is a Profile Essay required?
    NO.
  36. Do I need to have prerequisites finished before I apply?
    For admission into our Nursing Program, all prerequisites must be completed by the end of Fall quarter when you submit the application. For example, to qualify for Fall 2010 admission, complete all nine prerequisites by the end of Fall 2009. Send final official transcripts to the Nursing office upon request only.
  37. Can I take prerequisites at the community college?
    YES. Prerequisites can be taken at any community college. Please consult http://www.assist.org to determine equivalent courses. Or, you can look at our Course Equivalency Chart.
  38. Do prerequisites need to have been taken within the past five years?
    NO. CSUEB's Department of Nursing does not have time limits on prerequisites coursework.
  39. I took an Anatomy and Physiology combo course -will that satisfy prerequisite?
    NO, you must complete Anatomy & Physiology I and Anatomy & Physiology II from the same college or, you can take a separate Anatomy and a separate Physiology course. Please consult www.assist.org for equivalent coursework taken at any of the California Community Colleges. If the course in question was taken at another CSU, UC, or out of state university, please submit a course description of any prerequisite courses to be reviewed for equivalency to the pre-nursing evaluator before applying to the program. Students may fax, email or mail in their course description to the Nursing Department.
  40. I took Organic Chemistry -is that good enough?
    NO. CSUEB's Department of requires a General Chemistry course with Lab. Please check www.assist.org for course articulation.
  41. Which Critical Thinking course should I take?
    Any course that satisfies the General Education Critical Thinking requirement (GE area A3) will satisfy the critical thinking prerequisite. You can get acceptable community college Critical Thinking courses by going to www.assist.org . Select CSUEB and the college you are transferring from, click on CSU GE-Breadth Certification Courses, and then select from the CSU GE-Breadth Area drop-down menu A3 - Critical Thinking.
  42. I've taken Calculus, will this replace Statistics?
    NO. Calculus CANNOT substitute for Statistics. You must take an approved Statistics course.
  43. How do I know if a course I took at another school is equivalent to a CSUEB prerequisite?
    For coursework taken at a California Community College, please visit: www.assist.org or look at our Course Equivalency Chart to determine equivalent courses. If coursework was taken at another CSU, UC, private school, or an out-of-state school please submit a course description to the Department of Nursing and we will have an evaluator review if the course is equivalent.
  44. I took a course that I feel is equivalent to a prerequisite but it is not listed on the Assist website. What can I do?
    You will need to submit a course description of the prerequisite course(s) to the Department of Nursing at CSUEB, so an evaluator can verify whether or not the course is equivalent. It would be advantageous to have courses evaluated BEFORE you enroll into the course.
  45. How many people apply to the BSN program?
    The Nursing Department at CSU East Bay receives 800+ applications for the BSN program each year.
  46. How many people do you admit into the program?
    Of the 800+ applicants, approximately 120-130 students are admitted into the BSN program each Fall Quarter.
  47. If I'm denied admission, can I reapply?
    YES, students who are denied admission can re-apply for the following academic school year. There are no limitations on how many times you can apply to our program. You are required to resubmit all documentation such as transcripts, TEAS Scores, etc.

    Students who already have an RN license, but do not yet have a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) may apply to this program.
  2. Is the RN-BSN program impacted, like the pre-licensure program?
    NO. There are fewer applicants to the RN-BSN Advanced Placement program.
  3. Can I talk to a Nursing Advisor before I apply to the program?

    YES. There is an intensive program option that can be completed within one year, including summer quarter.
  19. If I have to work full-time, can I still complete this program?
    There is a part-time option for the RN-BSN program, which can be completed within 2 years. Many of the students in this program continue to work full-time while attending classes.
