Because Nursing has been designated as an impacted program by the Board of Trustees, a special admission procedure, via a supplemental application, has been instituted to assure that all students have an opportunity to be considered for admission to the Nursing major for fall quarter.

 

The nursing major at CSU East Bay has two degree options: 1) Pre-Licensure Clinical for those seeking a BS degree and California RN licensure, and 2) RN-BSN Advanced Placement for those currently holding a California RN license and seeking to complete the BS degree.Hundreds of applications are received each year for the Pre-licensure Option of the Nursing major, thus admission is highly competitive. To be considered for admission to the Clinical Nursing program, students must complete two application forms: 1) The CSU Application for Admission and 2) the Nursing Supplemental application. Both applications must be filed in NOVEMBER for admission in the fall quarter of the following year. Students must also take the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS). To be eligible for admission, a student must have the following: 1) an overall GPA of at least 3.00 in the most recent 90 quarter/60 semester units of coursework, 2) a GPA of at least 3.00 in nursing prerequisite science courses, 3) a GPA of at least 3.00 in all nursing prerequisite courses and 4) Must complete two science and two non-science prerequisites by Fall 2008 term. All required prerequisites must be complete by the end of Spring term. "C-" grades are not acceptable for the prerequisites.

 

PREREQUISITE COURSES AND COURSE EQUIVALENCIES

All prerequisite courses taken at campuses other than CSUEB must be approved as equivalent prior to submitting your Supplemental Application. A Course Equivalency Chart is available so you can compare courses. Candidates can also check on www.assist.org for course equivalencies to other California public colleges. Contact the Department (510-885-3481) for information on equivalency evaluation of courses from foreign universities, out-of-state campuses, or California universities not listed on the Equivalency Chart.

* PLEASE NOTE: If you complete a combined "Anatomy & Physiology I" course, you must take PART II from the same campus. If you take a single-topic "Anatomy" course at any campus, you may take a single-topic "Physiology" course from any other campus.

 

FALL 2009 PRE-LICENSURE CLINICAL NURSING PROGRAM APPLICATION

All application forms, transcripts and other required documents must be submitted to the CSUEB Department of Nursing & Health Sciences and to CSUEB by required dates.

 

DUE BY NOVEMBER 30, 2008:

1. Candidates who are currently attending CSUEB need not complete an application for University admission unless they will graduate in another major between now and Summer 2009. Registration eligibility must be maintained through Fall 2009. Please indicate "Nursing - Pre-Licensure Option" on the application as choice of major. 2. The CSUEB Clinical Nursing Program supplemental on-line application is
   only available between 10/1/2008 and 11/30/2008.

   If you are not a United States citizen, you must submit a copy of both sides of your Alien Registration Card, INS Form I-551 or Form I-94 to the Nursing & Health Sciences Department. Military veterans should submit a copy of your DD214 form.

 

DUE BY FEBRUARY 14, 2009:

1. Official transcripts are due by February 14, 2009 from each college or university attended. At least two science and two non-science prerequisites must be complete by Fall 2008 term. All nine prerequisites must be complete by the end of Spring 2009 term.
2. (OPTIONAL) Health Care Worker Application: If you work or have worked in the health care industry, you may qualify for additional admission points. Your work must be paid (not volunteer) and for the equivalent of six months full-time or one year part-time involving direct patient care.
3. (OPTIONAL) Language Proficiency Application: If you are proficient in a language other than English, you may qualify for additional admission points. Your non-English language skill must be certified and you must also score no lower than the 50th percentile on the English and Reading sections of the TEAS.
4. Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) scores: Please register at http://www.atitesting.com to take the TEAS. When you register, ATI Testing will issue a registration number that looks like this: A12345678 (it starts with the letter "A" followed by eight digits). Write this registration number on a paper and bring it with you on the test date. You will be required to insert this number on your answer sheet on the day of the test. If you do not insert this number on your answer sheet, your test will not be scored. Once the registration number has been issued, you can use it for every TEAS you take. If you need special testing arrangements because of a disability, contact the Student Disability Resource Center at (510) 885-3868. The TEAS test can be taken more than once, and the highest Adjusted Individual Total Score will be considered. Study guides are available at the CSUEB Bookstore (510-885-3507) and at the online store on the ATI website - http://www.atitesting.com. If the TEAS test is taken elsewhere, the candidate must arrange for an official report of test scores to be submitted to the CSUEB Department of Nursing & Health Sciences by February 14, 2009.

 

PLEASE NOTE!

February 14, 2009 is the absolute deadline for receipt of grades. It is possible that the official transcript may not arrive in time even though you order one early. To retain eligibility for the nursing program, the conditionally-admitted candidate is urged to submit a report card or grade report by February 14, 2009. Such grade reports must be written on college stationery and placed in sealed envelopes by the instructor(s), which can then be hand-carried or mailed to the Nursing Department.

 

POLICY FOR REPEATING PREREQUISITE COURSES:

Prerequisite courses may be repeated under the following conditions declared below: Repeating courses is always subject to the policies and procedures of the campus where the course was originally taken. If allowed, a student should request academic renewal from the school where the course is being repeated. But if that school's policy does not allow academic renewal, they may allow the student to repeat the course anyway (the repeat policy at many Bay Area Schools does not allow repeat of a course in which a 'C' grade was earned). In that case, the student's overall GPA will not change, and this Department will honor the repeated grade for nursing admission purposes only. Repeating courses taken within the last 7 years will result in a deduction of 5 points per repeat from the total eligibility score.

 

SELECTION OF STUDENTS FOR CLINICAL NURSING PROGRAM

To mitigate impacted program status through Supplemental Application admission criteria, the policy of the Department of Nursing and Health Sciences (approved May 1, 2003) is to admit qualified candidates in Fall Quarter with admission priority ranking as follows:

1. Military veterans who have met minimum prerequisite qualifications, were honorably discharged or released from active service within four years of application to the CSUEB Clinical Nursing Program, and are residents of California as defined for fee purposes
2. California residents who have met minimum prerequisite qualifications and are ranked according to screening criteria (includes those seeking second baccalaureates)
3. Non-California residents who have met minimum prerequisite qualifications and are ranked according to screening criteria (includes those seeking second baccalaureates)

 

Applicants are awarded admission up to 100 points based on the criteria listed below. Applicants with higher point totals have the best chance for admission.

 

• 50 points - for prerequisite GPA. Each repetition of a prerequisite course within a 7-year period will result in a deduction of 5 points.
• 40 points - for TEAS Adjusted Individual Total Score
• 5 points - for speaking and writing proficiency in English and one other language. Applicants must submit the Language Proficiency Form for non-English language and score minimum 50th percentile on the English and Reading sections of the TEAS.
• 5 points - for the equivalent of at least 6 months full-time paid employment in a health care setting providing direct patient care.

 

 

NOTIFICATION OF ELIGIBILITY AND ADMISSION

1. All offers of conditional admission to the nursing program AND notices of placement on the Wait List are sent via email by March or April. A second set of transcripts may be requested from students with in-progress classes.
2. All offers of admissions are conditional pending the results of Criminal Background checks.
3. WAIT LIST: Remaining eligible candidates are placed in ranked order on a Wait List according to accumulated admission points. If a candidate on the Wait List does not gain entry into the program and wishes to be considered for the following year, a new application packet must be filed.
4. WHAT IF THERE IS A TIE IN NUMBER OF ADMISSION POINTS AWARDED? In case of equal POINTS ranking of a number of candidates on the Wait List, tie-breakers will be based on 1) English and Reading scores on TEAS Test, then 2) cumulative GPA in all baccalaureate level coursework, then 3) residency status.
