How the Brain Does Math - It's Not the Same as Language

Nancy Knop is a science teacher with twenty-three years of experience in grades seven through twelve at Head-Royce School in Oakland. As she worked to meet the challenges of the different learning styles and abilities among her students in biological and physical science, she developed professional interest in cognitive science and neurobiology. In addition to attending numerous conferences on the brain and learning over the last decade, she conducts ongoing study of the primary research literature, especially in the areas of reading, math, and learning differences and disabilities. She completed the certificate program in Educational Therapy at the University of California, Berkeley in 2004. Interpreting what she has learned from her experience and study, Dr. Knop has been a speaker in a number of forums for audiences of students, parents, teacher-trainees, and experienced teachers.
