Network Security and Authentication for Remote Access to Scientific Equipment
The Interactive Remote Shared Access (IRSA) project at California State University, East Bay has developed and implemented applications to remotely operate visual and analytical scientific instruments (VASI). The project has developed applications that facilitate sharing of resource(s) like scientific samples and instruments among multiple users across the globe. Availability of these resources on the public domain leads to some attractive advantages and also leads to a host of security issues.
Leela Manam's thesis focuses on the security and authentication mechanisms to secure the IRSA system from unauthorized access and abuse. This thesis analyzes the security vulnerabilities at each layer of the IRSA network and proposes the mitigation strategies to minimize the threat. It also explores the methodology of designing a comprehensive security system and implementing it taking advantage of the latest security technologies and techniques.
