Dr. Detlef "Dietz" Warnke passed away in San Mateo, California on October 24, 2008. He was a Geology professor at CSUEB for nearly 40 years. The University and Department have benefited from his service in various capacities including serving as Department Chair, on numerous committees and as a member of the Governing Board of the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories. Dietz is a world renowned researcher in paleoceanography and paleoclimatology. He was the recipient of numerous grant proposals, the author/co-author of over 50 publications, and convened/organized sessions at national and international scientific meetings. His research took him around the world on 8 ocean research cruises. Dietz's achievements in research were paralleled by his accomplishments in instruction. He was highly regarded by his undergraduate and graduate students for his knowledge, insight and his emphasis on research in education. Dietz has been the primary thesis advisor for a dozen graduate students and served as an examination committee member for many more. He was a gentle and patient teacher and mentor and we miss him sorely.

Dietz is survived by his wife Holly, two sons Erik and Chris, daughter-in-law Sue, and 4 grandchildren Erik, Lia, Amber and Kane.

At the request of his family, contributions to the Geology Program at CSUEB may be made in Dietz's memory. Click here to make a gift.
