Chemistry is known as the central science because just about everything
that we can touch and feel is made of chemicals. The many
applications of chemistry to our lives have created a broad range
of opportunities for employment. With a B.A., B.S. or M.S.
degree in chemistry, a student may find a research or technical
position in petroleum, chemical, food processing, agriculture, pharmaceutical,
biochemical and biotechnology industries. Graduates of chemistry
also work in sales and plant development, quality control, customer
relations, and many other aspects of modern business. Combining
the bachelor’s degree in chemistry with a higher degree can lead
to many unique and rewarding careers. The B.A. in chemistry
and the B.S. in biochemistry are particularly useful for those who
are interested in medical school and a professional career in medical
research. The B.S. and M.S. provide excellent preparation
for the Ph.D. degree for the student who wants to make research
and/or teaching in chemistry a primary occupation. Chemical
research is at the heart of progress that is made in the development
of pharmaceuticals, agriculture, nutrition, the environment, and
our understanding of nature. In
general, the outlook is bright for anyone who wishes to study chemistry.
