College of Science Commencement Information

The College of Science Commencement Ceremony begins on Sunday, June 15, 2008, promptly at 1 p.m., in the University Stadium. Plan to arrive at Cal State East Bay no later than 12 noon . Graduates will begin to line up near the Soccer Practice Field (next to the Baseball Diamond and parking lot N). Look for the White Canopy.

Guests should proceed directly to the Stadium for seating. There will be limited guest seating on the floor of the stadium and ample bleacher seating. Please refrain from visiting with family and friends until after the ceremony. There are no restrictions as to the number of guests you can invite and no parking passes are required. Graduates and their guests can park in most lots; however, Lots L and M will be designated as disabled parking.

We highly recommend that you and your guests come prepared with sunscreen and bottled water . Commencement programs will be available for you and your guests at the Stadium. There will be designated seating areas for disabled guests, located to the left of the graduate seating area, as well as a seating area for those who require an American Sign Language interpreter. Graduates with specials needs, i.e. difficulties maneuvering stairs and walking across grass, please contact the Student Disability and Resource Center (SDRC) at 510-885-3868, as soon as possible.

Faculty Marshals will guide you through the Science Ceremony. Please follow their instructions. You will be handed an "announcer card" on which you will write your name legibly. You will have plenty of time before the ceremony begins to complete this card. Your name will be read from the card and announced as you walk across the stage to receive a certificate of participation. Your diploma will be mailed to your address on file after verification of all completed degree requirements.

Masters' candidates will line up in pairs to the right of the White Canopy, separately from Bachelors' candidates , who will line up in pairs on the opposite side; both following departmental order as indicated by signs. There will be two lines for each group. You will sit next to the person with whom you are paired with.

The signs are arranged as follows:

  1. Special Majors
  2. Multimedia (Masters only)
  3. Engineering
  4. Psychology (Bachelors only)
  5. Nursing (Bachelors only)
  6. Health Sciences (Bachelors only)
  7. Biological Sciences
  8. Chemistry
  9. Biochemistry (Bachelors only)
  10. Environmental Science (Bachelors only)
  11. Geological Sciences
  12. Physics (Bachelors only)
  13. Statistics
  14. Telecommunication Systems (Masters only)
  15. Mathematics
  16. Computer Science

Masters' candidates will precede the undergraduates down the stairs leading down into the Stadium. You will move, then stop for awhile, and then start again. When you reach your row, your two lines will merge into one. Try to stay with your department.

After you are seated, the ceremony will begin. The front row of graduates will move to their right out of their seats. When the front row is nearly finished the second will go, etc. You will be photographed before going up on the stage. As you go up on the stage, give your card to the announcer on stage. Your name will be read from the card and used to keep the photographs in order. Once on the stage, you will be photographed again. After you leave the stage, at the center stairwell, return to your seat from the left of that row, the same way you entered when you first sat down.

Recognizing all the students takes approximately 1.5 hours. Please be courteous to the graduates who come after you by staying in your seat until the ceremony is over. Graduates will not be permitted to leave during the ceremony. At the conclusion of the ceremony, you will be directed out of your seats.

Congratulations!
